Oaxaca Old-Fashioned

Phil Ward's 2007 creation is the most requested (and most imitated) of Death & Co cocktails—today you'll find it on menus around the world, making it a true "modern classic." The drink not only opened our minds on how to use aggressively flavored spirits such as mezcal (which was new to the US market at the time), but it blazed a trail for countless old-fashioned variations to come.

1½ ounces Reposado Tequila
½ ounce mezcal
1 teaspoon agave nectar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Garnigh: 1 orange twist

Stir all the ingredients with ice, then strain into an old-fashioned glass over 1 large ice cube. Flame the orange twist over the drink, then drop it into the drink.
